Subject: R134 for campers?

I just had my A/C compressor changed by my mechanic.

One thing he mentioned I found interesting. He is relectant to use the R134 refridgerant for campers because of possible leaks that could get into the sleeping area at night. Apparantly, R134 can cause immediate cardiac arrest in otherwise healthy individuals (ie. no heart condition).

I had already decided to go with R12 before he told me about this. I will retrofit in a few years. I wonder though, will the alternative be R134 in a couple of years if the gas is found to be hazardous (ie. kills a few people and becomes unpopular)?

Also, why would a gas that could immediately kill people be sanctioned over a gas that we know will not cause immediate harm to our health?
