I haven't done this, but my thoughts were to use the grab handle(s).  I'm not
certain about earlier Vanagons like yours, but later models like mine came
with a grab handle on the passenger side A-pillar.  Long ago I installed
another one to match on the driver's side.  These mount quite securely and I
thought I could use some sort of telescoping tube-within-a-tube to place
between the handles and then extend it into them.
