Subject: Westy brainteaser: Limbo Transporters By the Tunnel campout.
As everyone knows Transporters By The Tunnel is the place to be
this weekend. (And it's a real campout this time. Not hypothetical
like last week. See: http://www.bcn.net/~limbo/flyer99.html) I have two
brainteasers for you this week. The first one is a bit technical (crossposting
to the Diesel list), so I thought I add another non-technical one as well.
Brainteaser 1:
==============
Martin's 1.9l turbo IDI Westy "Olga" and Mike's 1.9l Turbo DI (*) "Sunny"
are both going to Transporters By the Tunnel, but who gets there the quickest?
You can assume that the driving distance is approximately the same from
New Haven and Boston respectively, instead compare the two engine
types, indirect and direct injection type, assuming they are optimally
tuned.
1.9l IDI 1.9l DI
Efficiency: 250 g/kWh 204 g/kWh (Optimal)
Max boost: 1bar(modified) 1bar
Max oxidation 70% 50% (How much of the air is "burnt")
You are welcome to make use of any other published figures on the
engines, tuned or stock. It's the motivation of the answer that counts.
(Both engines are normally intercooled, although at the moment I have mine
out for replumbing. You can consider both cases if you like to)
(*) Assuming Mike actaully got his conversion done as he planned. Haven't
heard form him for a while.
Brainteaser 2:
==============
Instead of just hiking to the historic Hoosac rail tunnel, this year
Jim has decided to drive though the tunnel. (Buy is he looking for
trouble this year ;-) This is a bit tricky since you have to be quick
in order to not end up as the hood decoration on one of the passing trains.
Yet worse, during the night vandals struck and broke the headlights of all
the busses. Luckily someone has one spare 7" light. At most two busses can
travel through the tunnel using the one light each time. And then the light
has to be delivered back by one bus. Four brave busses are going:
Ken's 5cyl conversion goes though the tunnel in 1 minute.
Jim's Westy "GTI" takes 2 min.
Mark's splitty has lost 4th gear and takes 5 min.
Patrick's '71 hardly runs at all (Despite his garage full of engines). 10 min.
What is the time-optimal strategy for getting all busses through the tunnel
and how long does it take?
(And you think I'm kidding! Just read about how Jim got in trouble
two years ago: http://www.bcn.net/~limbo/TBT97.html)
See you at Transporters By the Tunnel!
Cheers,
Martin
