I took an old VC out last night from a vehicle that had had its from diff
replaced at the dealer. Not sure why the diff was replaced, but it could
have been a bad VC.

I loosened the two little allen head filler bolts on the VC to check the
color of the fluid and I can report:

1. The fluid was obviously under pressure as it gushed out of either hole
until I put the screw back in. I am thinking I should take a measurement on
the amount of pressure in there using something--possibly I will use a fuel
pressure gague I have here and see if it can give a reading on the pressure
in there.

2. The fluid felt and looked like kind of like...

...black CV joint grease and...
...black GE Silicon Glue of the sort you buy at the hardware store in
little tub es the size of a pair of glasses.

It definitely flows when you leave it alone however, unlike either of the
above two substances. The little amount I wiped on the inside of the shot
glass was on the bottom of that shot glass in a little while.

This particular VC gave a reading of 1.4 revolutions on a pressure of 25
foot lbs. Until I test additional VCs, I won't know how that compares to
the others.

According to Oregon and Wheddle, the VC ought to be shot because the fluid
was so dark in color. It was not black but almost so. To the extent that it
was not black, it was battleship color.
