This is how it is in my '84 Westy. The '85 GL has three interior lights and all go on when any door/hatch is opened. I presume that the Westy does it this way because VW anticipated that the slider and /or hatch would be open for long periods. I know the other arrangement can run the battery down pretty quick.

Uh...add door switches to the slider and hatch. They ground to the chassis when the door opens. To switch light off, use the center position of the light switch. Since you're only talking about one light here, wouldn't be worth the effort to add another switch, IMO.
