Aaaaaahhh, 'the Purpose of the Skylight',....who can truly answer such a
question? :-)
.....But I am kind of a ventilation freak, so ONE of my FAVORITE things
about the Westy is that with two heaters (3 if I include the compact
electric one for AC hook-up), one air conditioner, two screened
windows,curtains, two front windows, wing vent windows, flow through
ventilation, assorted vents (including those rear vents), the pop top, the
screen on the canvas, curtains, the hatch (w/screen), the doors AND the
(screened and/or shaded!) skylight.........I can get the airflow and
temperature and light and shade in the van just EXACTLY the way I want
it...And the if the sun is in the wrong place(!) or the wind coming from the
wrong direction, I can just drive/turn a few feet and even THAT'S taken care
of! AND I bet I've even forgotten something that someone on the list will
remind us of!
So here on the windy west coast, I pop the skylight a lot to provide/create
the updraft/'exhaust' to encourage air coming in from the one or two opened
screened side windows. Creates a really fresh almost outdoors environment in
the van.... without any #*!@*# insects...(I like to park by the ocean or in
parks a lot a and write/read).
When I have the top popped and open the flap, that can work equally well --
but then sometimes that leaves the sun shining directly on the rear
seat/table ( where I love to hang out) so I use the skylight for air and
keep the pop top flap closed for shade.....Or, if I'm parked and noisy
traffic is going by on the left side of the van, then I can open the
skylight instead of the left window to create a draft and keep some of the
noise out.(...and I'd close the curtains on the left side of the van).
Also, I often leave the skylight open often when I park the van. It vents
the hot air that would otherwise build up AND I don't have to leave a window
open at "street level" which might tempt those thieves. (Tinted windows and
a lighter paint color really help here also.) I usually forget that I have
the skylight open, and often have to stop to close it after I've already
gotten going again.
I could go on (believe me), but you don't really want to know. Anyway,
since YOU did already BUY a new skylight, that must mean you are ready to
discover its true purpose for yourself!
