Subject: Emissions off the chart...
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

Good Morning All, This is my first attempt using the Vanagon list. My wife, 2 children and I are the proud new owners (at least I am...) of a 1985 Vanagon GL. I am happy, my wife is not... She thinks we got "taken for a ride"... here is the story. It was running rough on our maiden voyage home from the sellers house so I started looking around. The Oxygen sensor was not connected so I started looking for a lead that was close to it and not connected. I found one (Green) that was part of a big wire harness coming from the big connector off what appears to be the ECU. I don't have Bentley yet so I don't know for certain. I cleaned the leads and connect them. The engine seemed to run better and the Oxygen Sensor light did not come on. Fixed. Not quite... My lovely bride took it to Inspection and she said that she, and the Vanagon were the spectacle of the day. (BTW, it is using gallons and gallons of gas). 220 Emission Units (not sure what the units are) is the maximum allowed for the vehicle and it read 2000! She said everyone in the Inspection station came over to see. Can anyone offer me some clue as to what to do and how to make sure the fix actually works (remember, I said the Van was running better than when we first got it). Thank you.

Rich, Annemarie, Nicole and Mark 98 Bug 85 Vanagon GL
