Hi Westies! Background: Today I was reading the Haynes Techbook on brakes, and they had an interesting suggestion regarding removing stuck-on brake drums. I don't know if will work on our Vanagons, but it might. The Idea: You know those two bolts on our drums that appear to serve no useful purpose? What Haynes says is to do is put longer bolts in the holes, and slowly (alternately) tighten them, until they press the drum off. The caveat: I don't know enough about our brakes to determine if this will work. The Desired Advantage: I am hopeful that it will save me from having to contort myself with a mirror to see into the star-adjuster holes, or get under the van to back off the parking brake adjuster. All comments cheerfully accepted. Cheers! Marshall Ruskin 84 Westy "Iron Igloo" Founding Member of "Vanagon's Anonymous" |
