Hi all, I'm brand-spankin new to the list and to Vanagons. I have owned a 77 Westy for years and have had several air-cooleds. I know them pretty intimately. I know nothing of vanagons except they are water-cooled and have heat and probably A/c. Recently the other vw owner in my Indiana town asked me if I'd want to buy one of his vanagons. I'm looking at a 84 Westy automatic:( with 130K miles. Rear A/C works. It has a bad exhaust that needs replaced-pricey per my catalogs. Body is sound except for a significantly rusted seam on the drivers side rocker. Interior is complete and excellent. I drove it today(first time ever in a vanagon) and it was sooo comfy and driveable. I wish my '77 had that slide-out middle seat. It is just the ticket for my family of 5. Anyway the price is $1000 which seems reasonable for a running westy.(good running). What should I be looking at on this bus before I fork over a grand? Do you guys even call these busses or just vanagons? I'd appreciate any input. Remember, my only experience with these is waving at them on the road from my sage green camper. I figure for a tjousand I'll buy it and start learning. Thanks all!
