I'm new to this list (been reading for a few days now) and after keeping my waterboxer on the road for four years with duct tape, chewing gum, and bits of string, I feel like I've come home! It's good (sniff) to know that I'm not alone!
Okay, regarding powersteering... I just replaced the stock hydrolic lines (high and low pressure) that run from the engine compartment to just behind the fuel tank using copper tubing (1/2" and 3/8" od), compression fittings, flare fittings, and hose clamps. If you approach this job, know that the hose barbs on the original low pressure (1/2") line *are not* necessary. The unions will hold if you push a couple of inches of tubing into the existing pressure hoses and clamp them with heavy duty radiator clamps (the common ring type with the tightening screw/nut).
My van has just over 100K miles and I've been driving it on NY State's salty/sandy roads for four years now. Lottsa' rotting underneath!
