I can vouch for ust replacing your regular sealed beams with H4's, using standard wattage bulbs! I've done this on every VW I've owned since about 1980 or so. (In fact, I just keep moving the same set to each new vehicle...) They throw large amounts of light in a wide pattern. Just make sure they're adjusted properly. If they're to high, the low beam will blind oncoming traffic.) If you stick with standard wattage H4 bulbs you don't need to replace anything in the wiring either.
