I too just got a case of the noisy lifters.  Got an '83 with about 110,000
on the engine (the engine was supposedly replaced at about 50K--160K on the
van).  I will try the transmission fluid/magic oil miracle cure, and report
the results.

In the early '80's, I drained the oil and ran a gallon of kerosine in the
crackcase of a 1970 International PU at idle for about 5 minutes in an
attempt to cure low oil pressure (due to what I believed was an incredible
build-up of sludge throughout the engine).  It did help, with no adverse
side effects (although it was hard to hurt that old truck).  I also cured a
non-working hydralic system on an old Ford 8N tractor using the "kerosine
wash."

Assuming the transmission fluid/magic oil does not work, how hard is it to
replace the hydralic lifters on an '83 1.9 water-cooled?  Or should I try
adjusting the valve lifters first?
