Dear List,

Is it possible that an improperly installed/ tightened wheel bearing could cause the left rear wheel of my Vanagon 83.5 to look splayed out from the bottom. When you look from behind it doesn't look precisely plumb like the right rear wheel. I just noticed this after glancing (only) at all the messages concerning peening etc. One indicated that replacing the bearings was a fairly delicate job requiring more finesse than brawn. I remember watching my mechanic replace the wheel bearing. He had a terrible time getting the old one off and seemed to torque the new one down ferociously.

I have not noticed any uneven wear yet; but I haven't put on too many miles since the bearing change either.

Thanks for any thoughts,

Woody
