Probably not as a guess. BTW, the rear wheel hub on a 85 Vanagon are torgued to 450 ft/lbs, just FYI..... (try finding one to rent, I just bought one......).

Bearing setup for the rear wheels is different the the front.

Might check the 2 bushings that hold the rear axle arm onto the Vanagon body for wear.
