A customer of mine had a bad experience with a diesel Vanagon engine purchased at Parts Place. Without going into details, suffice it to say that my customer ended up writing it off as a total loss and buying another engine elsewhere. The engine was only three months old at the time. Of course, this was only one incident, which may or may not be typical. However, you may want to search the archives regarding Parts Place.

VW Diesel Parts, http://www.bright.net/~vwdiesel/ , has impressed me with their expertise and overall reputation, although I do not have any first-hand experience with their engines. Based on my general impression, though, I'd probably talk to them if I needed a diesel engine.
