Subject: '86 synchro vs. '91 GL Auto, which to buy
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

-- My wife and I are seriously considering the purchase of one of the below vehicles. We plan to add a pop-top at the very least, and perhaps the full camper interior to whichever vehicle we buy.

1986 Synchro, ~100K miles, newer clutch and head gaskets, 4 winters in Maine, haven't seen it but described as almost no rust and in good shape, $6750

Pros: - Synchro!! - New Michelin tires - Tent for rear

Cons: - Engine has 100k on it and will most likely need a re-build soon. - Some rust at seams - Located 4 hours away, haven't seen it yet - most likely will require more work

1991 Vanagon GL, Automatic, VW rebuilt engine at 140K, Amaco rebuilt trany and torque converter at 160K (two months ago) with 1 year warranty, no rust, slightly warped rotor (almost un-noticeable), dent on sliding door and to the rear of sliding door but paint still intact (owner took a turn next to a fence post a bit tight), interior is dirty and a bit rough, coolant temp sensor bad (light flashes and no temp on guage), alloy wheels, extra set studded winter tires, $5,900

Pros: -Major mechanical R&R completed, unlikely to need much work -Drives smoothly, wife likes automatic -No rust except a slight amount at rocker panel where fence post removed side molding. Underbody very clean - Only driven one winter, 2nd owner - Price seems reasonable considering new Engine and Trans

Cons: - Dent (cosmetic) - A/C isn't ice cold but should it be? - Power mirrors don't move smoothly - Not Synchro, but does have studded Hakka's

Thanks for any feedback! Ezra Hall ehall@btv.ibm.com
