Alan,
I may be missing something here with your particular setup, but all I did
was add one of those metal brackets provided by most infant seat carriers to
the seat belt strap. These brackets prevent the length of the seat belt
from being adjusted after they are in place. Once you figure out the
correct length needed to securely hold down the seat, put the bracket on the
belt and it should hold securely. I adjusted mine to a length that is hard
to lock in place unless you put pressure on the seat (I use my knee) to give
you enough room to lock it in place. It works fine for us on the back seat.
I suspect most baby-oriented stores that carry infant seats should have
these brackets if you don't already have one. A lot easier than switching
seatbelts around.
