I posted a note about this a few months back, but for those of you wondering about pop-top alternatives in general, check out the Sportsmobile. They do mostly Ford and Dodge pop-top conversions now, but their first conversion in 1961 was -you got it - a Type 2 bus!

Check out their web site at www.sportsmobile.com

They offer really nice (and expensive) looking 4WD packages as well as 2WDs. There are several of them here in Santa Barbara, and the interiors look really nice (albeit a bit over-stuffed with all the gizmos IMHO). What impressed me most was watching one of them pull a big trailer loaded with gear, 6 bikes, and 4 kayaks up a steep grade in the western Sierras. He blew past me like I was standing still (well, maxed out at 50MPH in 3rd). (And the whole time I found myself grumbling that he was probably getting about the same gas mileage as me in my Syncro!)
