A larger alternator does only allow to operate more accessories, providing of course that the wiring is sufficient also. A 90 amp alternator is more than adequate for a Vanagon unless you are adding killer lighting or electric heat or something. The wiring however has much to be desired. Adding an additional wire directly from the alternator to the fuse box will make a noticeable difference in lights and heater fan speed. If you measure the voltage at the alternator and the fuse box with the existing wiring and all the lights and fans running, you will see a 1 to 1.5 volt drop.
