Timing (for US-spec engines) is 5 degrees ATDC, but the timing mark is such that if you set the mark opposite the joint between the two halves of the case you will be correctly timed. There is a second mark on the next flange of the pulley, more of a rounded indentation -- this indicates TDC. There is a small green or black box on the left bulkhead forward of the coil -- this is the ignition stabilizer. To set the time, you have to unplug the wires from this (power off) and plug them into each other. Then set the idle speed to 800 rpm and set timing. Shut off power and reconnect idle stabilizer. When it is working properly it will make the timing jump around several degrees at idle.
