Well, a brand new (not rebuilt) compressor with clutch and a new receiver dryer is about $370 plus shipping from me, so likely you could replace the compressor with brand new rather than just repairing it and end up at about the same price. (On a side note, new later model Vanagon compressors are getting harder and harder to get; soon rebuilt may end up being the only option.)
