An intriguing problem, I must admit. I cant be of much help either, as I don't have much experience troubleshooting oil pressure systems (although I did it endlessly on my Squareback - not finished yet), but what I want to say is, did you try to ground the wire to the base of the sender to check if the ground to the top of the filter is good? I get the feeling you only grounded it against the cyl. head, try to ground it to the base of the sender and to the filter ass'y itself. Then you will at least see if those part gets its grounds right. If not, we have heard of bad grounds under the dash lately.
