I use the timing marks on the v-belt pulley. I take a paint marker and put a dot on the arrow on the plastic cover that goes over the crank pulley and another dot on the v-belt pulley - this way with a timing light you can see what is happening. I realize this in not much of a help with the Diesel, but it is a start!
