Is the whining noise related to engine speed or Vehicle speed? These pumps hardly ever go bad and the usual failure is that they get contaminated, seize, and break the drive hub. If the noise is van speed related, then there may be a problem with the final drive. There are a number of bearings that can cause noise in the auto section. Need to determine whether is output or input section related.
