Being picky here, but . .

Cavitating is what happens when a bearing wears out and a spindle is no longer rotating around a single axis.

In other words the pump's spindle is kind of rumbling around a wallered out hole instead of simply spinning. Really has nothing to do with pumping air; it's just not pumping much of anything.

My apologies for the poor description.
