The cable and linkages need to be lubricated. The cable can be removed so it and the housing can be greased. I lube the moving parts of the throttle linkage and the pedal hinge, too. Spray-grease will make it easier to get into the cable housing and linkages. Don't use WD40 and similar, except to "wet" the surfaces, as they do not provide enough lubrication for this application. Alternatively, remove and grease the cable, and use an oil can to flood the housing.
