Ken Swan carries plastic fuel cans on top of his luggage rack. The problem I see with this is that the sun tends to heat these things up and gasoline's high vapor pressure tends to want to bulge the plastic and blow the rupture disc. At the very least the rear vent cap will pop. And if you drive around with the vent cap off, you're continuously venting gas vapors.

Also, resist temptation to put a gas can in the spare tire carrier. I had one rupture there after presumably shifting and leaning against a coolant hose. It could also just have been the hot air coming off the radiator.

So I haven't found a good solution yet, but I know a few things that don't work well. :-o
