I repaired a tank with a piece of mylar (taken from a balloon)
and some of that black body trim cement. It seemed to contract
and expand okay. I used it for about a year that way. I
finally installed the new tank.

Steve,
There is not much to the sensor itself. I would look
all around before getting a new one. Can you see it
cracked and leaking or is it still comming from the
threaded portion of the tank/sensor? If so tighten
the Sh**t out of it. I had to do this with a brand new
tank and brand new O-ring. It leaked until I tightened
it really snug. I think it is 32mm. I used my
Campagnolo head spanner from my bicycle to doit. Be
careful because the sensor is made of hard
nylon/plastic and will wear the edges of the nut if
the wrench slips off.
I would really put in a new water tank, only $19?
dollars with cap from the BusDepot. This could be the
cause of the leakeage. They do wear and crack with
the heat differential of the coolant.
Hope this helps
