Hi Bud,
I am also a bucket carrying member of the
WasserLeaker's club. Hey I did not want to be part of
this club at all. My 89 Syncro turned 100K and the
seeping started around the cap nuts on one head about
a month ago. I was all ready to put new sealant and
retorque. Now I have a genuine crack running from the
exhaust port towards the intake port. Just on one
side/one head. I use about 1 quart a day. Hey I
needed to flush the system out anyway. I don't think
this is the best way to do the flush. ;-)
I visited several shops around here (Rochester NY) for
estimates and all have told me to replace everything
on both sides. Heads & gaskets. So I will be paying
through the nose and get this done because like most
of us on the list I "worship" that van.
At any rate, I will be getting this done this week and
I still have one used head, uncracked, that I would
probably part with if you don't find another donor.
I've looked at the heads from all the list suppliers
Boston Engines is the cheapest (he rolls his own), Bus
Depot has great prices, Vanagain, Volks Motorsports,
and FastGerman all have competitive prices. It's up
for you to continue the relationship.
I wanted to do this (with appropriate planning) and
use FastGerman's option of bigger valves on their
"high performance" head. This is a nice option (=$).
They quoted me $650 for one head. You can also
complete the performance thing with the 1.25 rocker
arms with the head. I just don't have $2,500 sitting
around for the van when the kids are going back to
school next week. Heck I didn't have the $1,500
either.
I'll keep you posted as to the status of my (good?)
head once it is off the engine.
Cheers
Joel Cort
