I know you will need a letter of compliance from VW that states the same vehicle was available here in the US the same year. That may mean at the least, you can only bring in the same year that the diesel was sold here. '82 - '85?

If these came from the factory with a different series VIN number, you may be out of luck all together.

Are these things too tall for a shipping container?

I may be interested if the details are worked out. I'll be in Germany in a couple of weeks and could look them over.

US Customs has a web page on importing cars. A search should find the customs main page and lead you there.
