I used the above in that order and approached from the rear and just barely got at it. It would have been impossible if they were rotted permanently in place like my exhaust nuts/studs, but often these are likely caked with oil. Actually, one stud came out instead of the nut unthreading. Also, the above is based on my 84...I have no specific knowledge of the others if they're not air cooled. Sorry for the amateur description...I'm new to this vanagon world.
