Hi Jeff,

I just did this on my 89 Syncro Westy. I acquired the seat from a list member in NJ for $100 plus $25 shipping. The seat came from a junk yard and was absolutely filthy and greasy. It looked like they stored an oil can on it. I cleaned it up and amazingly it came out all clean with regular carpet/upholstery cleaner. It was grey velour like the rest of my van. I installed an opera seat right behind the passenger seat. I got the main measurements from a fellow listee with a Carat here in Rochester. I spent about 10 mins. measuring and 2 hours talking VW stuff. Anyway I can lend a hand with this because I was in the same boat as you currently are now. I can send you the exact measurements that I used (and appear to work) - of course I don't have them here in my office so I'll send you another note. Some vans (90-91) may already have the fittings in the floor and the threaded holes behind the battery/wheel well ready to install this seat and make it the MV model. So you would be in luck if this was on yours. But the main thing is to measure and remeasure where you are going to put the main back bracket against the wheel well. You will also need to pull out the battery to get two holes in there to mount the 2 left bolts of the bracket. The other two holes will end up in the wheel well exposed to the road dirt/salt/water/ice. I used some undercoating to hide these two bolts & nuts. Once the bracket is secured you will still have some adjustment room since the holes are slotted. Now you will have to secure legs of the seat. I have a hardwood/linoleum flooring in my Westy. Some came with carpeting. I measured the location of each peg hole. Went to my local hardware store and purchased two bushings of close to the same inside diameter as the (about ½" [13mm]) peg holes on the bottom of the seat frame. The outside diameter was about ¾". I got my drill with a ¾" wood drill bit and started cranking a hole with the consciousness of the metal flooring close by. I did not want to punch through the floor, nor damage the drill bit. The idea here is to secure the bushings inplace with adhesive/super glue, and have the main wear on the inside of the bushing not the flooring of the van. The bushings where about ¼ " too tall so I had to trim them using a pipe cutter to adjust to just a little lip over the linoleum flooring. I plan to acquire a carpet from www.gowesty.com <http://www.gowesty.com> specially made for the Westy with the opera seat. Ok! now you have the floor holes, insert the bushings and insert the seat fram to see how close they match up with the quick-release pin. Adjust the back as much as possible and if need be adjust the floor hole to ensure proper allignment. The seat should pop in and out real easily from the quick realease. I ended up hollowing out the floor holes to gain some lateral adjustment space. I have not yet secured the bushings with glue but this is the final step. Did you also get both seat belt parts for the bracket? If not I have a junkyard near by that has a bracket and seat belt still available (~$50 (bastards!)). Anyway you also need to get the longer bolt for the passenger seatbelt bracket. The same bolt will be used for the new cable side seatbelt receptor and the existing passenger bracket receptors. The other retractable seat belt will use the same bolt holes as the right side of the back bracket that bolts into the wheel well. Did you get all those bolts/nuts? Did you also get the little black storage tray that fits on the two knobby looking hooks on the black bracket and fits in the new storage area between the seats. I do not have it but the guy with the Carat does and I can probably get the part number if you wish to order it. I'll forward the exact dimensions when I get home. I'll try and get some pics out but I am not modern with that digital stuff and only have a Cannon F1 that uses the old 35mm film. Made right here in Rochester NY by the Kodak Company J. Then I will have to scramble to get the pics scanned into my system by begging the Web guys to do the scan and send me the files. Not quite a business need here. Hope this helps. Cheers Joel Cort 89 Syncro Westy MV Rochester NY.
