How about using laser diodes for the tail lights? I've been meaning to post this idea for a few months now, but it seems that big trucks (semi's), Ryder rental trucks, and county busses have the red laser diodes as the brake light function. Also, some stoplights use them (throughtout all of CA - not in Idaho yet thouhg!)

Just an idea. One of the electronics folks out there can rig up some boiler plate model to test :-) -M
