Stuart, There is a spray specifically for use when storing internal combustion engines. The spray from Canadian Tire is their own house brand: Motomaster "Engine Storage Spray" but I'm sure any FLAPS has something similar. That is what I used this winter while Fritz sat freezing his lug n*ts. This spray is specifically designed to cling and coat surfaces. Instead of removing the plugs, I removed the air filter and sprayed directly into the air intake. For 2 cycle motors you are supposed to spray until the engine stalls; I didn't do that. Instead I just gave it what I thought felt good and shut it down. This spring, I removed the plugs, spun the engine, sprayed cleaner on the plugs, reinstalled and away we went. For our MR2, I just used a few squirts of engine oil. The MR2 engine sits upright and I wanted the oil to seep in over the rings. With the VW engine cylinders lying on their sides, I didn't think the rings would stay wet over the winter so I used the spray. Larry '86 Syncro Westfalia
