One thing I have experienced is severe wear on the windshield wiper shafts which caused water to pour in through the gap, into the front & soaking the driver's footwell. Took me a while to find out where it was coming from, as it's not immediately obvious ... The only cure was to replace the wiper arm pivot shafts and outer bits .....
