I posed a similar question in a p-mail to one of the listee - yoda's.

He said that the handle has splines on it - and that is likely what is binding your handle on.

Some effort will be required, perhaps using a lever for amplification.

After what you said, I felt uncomfortable using the word "force" in my answer!
