I have tried this approach with Swamp Coolers. These are those evaporative water cooling units seen on houses in the dry Southwest. They corrode at a fast rate. There is an item for sale called a sacrificial anode. The one I put in was an aluminum bar with a wire screwed to the metal case. This bar sat in the water. Mine collected a mass of gray matter. I am not sure how you would keep the tank clean of this gunk.

What if one was to "hang" a zinc rod or whatever in the coolant tank, using a piece of copper wire to hang it from. This wire could then be attached to the engine using an existing bolt, or ground wire mounting point. Of course it would be necessay to modify the cap for the coolant tank... Any thoughts on this? Also, it would be easier to take a peek at to see if it's working, as opposed to removing the allen head bolt and loosing coolant, no?...
