Not all SD508's are the same.  Different versions had different mounts on
the back. I have new ones for about $175 as I recall (writing from home
right now), which have the correct pads for a Vanagon.  '83 to early '86
Vanagons all had the same pads on their 508's, but some VW cars had
different pads, so check your van's layout before junkyard hunting.  If you
have a mid-86 on, you don't have a 508 at all; they used two other
compressors.
