Tom; Remove plugs and dry out the cylinders with an air hose. Check the cat/conv for good flow. Sometimes the element comes loose. You might still have a spark problem as in two plug wires switched or a distributor problem. Our 85 had a sticking advance mechanism. It would stick at full advance making it almost impossible to start. Sometimes you could floor it and start it. I took the ditrib apart and lubricated. Be careful taking the connector off. You can break the plastic insulation on the bottom. Let me know. Drive Safely & Good Luck Ken Lewis<Kernersville,NC>86 VW crewcab;60 T-5 Coupe

I have been working on my '84 Vanagon off and on since I bought it ( in between diesel rabbits) and I just can't seem to win. Maybe there is a majician out there who can help. I bought this van (cheap) it's in great shape, the interior is excellent and there was not any rust at all till this last few weeks when I started noticing a little seam rust. It has it's original paint too! The trouble is it wont run. The previous owner had parked it in his garage for a period of 5 years, his wife could no longer drive it due to a medical condition and he didn't plan on "putting it away" (as proven by the impecably new Pirelli tires) He went out and started it every few months until last fall when the battery wouldn't crank it over anymore. (3 year battery, lasted 4.5 years in storage) Thinking it couldn't be anything major I paid the man $600 and towed it home. I have done all that I can or know to do and still I can't get it to go. I have drained all the fuel and installed new filters, oil & gas both. new spark plugs, ecm module, injector seals, coil, temp.(head) sensor, coolant level is right, the mechanical timing seems to be right, I have gone through the afc system and the dang computer pin by pin with my multimeter, the fuel pressure when I turn the key on is about 28psi. I can't check it when running as it wont! I did have it running breifly a while back by installing a chevy coil, but then I replaced the ecm and installed a new bosch coil ( I know the difference but I had to try something! at that point it would only idle anyway(with the accel coil) The Afc checks out ok the plate slides and all the ohms chaange when it's moved etc. and the readings are within tolerances. (per Bently) I still have what I believe to be a "flooded condition" when I attempt to start it at first it will barley start ukp and thenm quite, when I walk to the rear I amell gasoline. ergo my hunch of flooded. Yes I have checked the grounds and cleaned them all real well . ANY SUGGESTIONS? Tom
