I went to visit the PO mechanic of my 91 Syncro Westy to talk about a few problems and to look at the 'new' syncro double cab that he has just purchased.

When I arrived, I first noticed the skid rails leaning against the side of the garage, upon entering, I saw him staring at the transmission on the work bench. I could not believe what I saw: the top of the transmission housing (the center housing) had been eaten completely through the top of the casing - a whole the size of a hot-dog bun. It looked like acid or electrolysis did the dirty deed. Not only that, it had eaten into the differential housing at the seam.

He had wondered why he could not keep gear oil in it, and had taken it out to find out. Well he found out OK!!

I'd have to say that he was taking it very well, I would have been sick!!!!! at seeing mine like that. He was in the throws of dismantling the tranny and calling around for new housings -- $OUCH$.

In a separate post I may soon be asking (on his behalf) "WTB Syncro Tranny"

I know that Ron at the Busdepot sells rebuilt trannys from Rancho Performance. Any other good sources for syncro tranny housings?? or syncro tranny rebuilds??? My PO mechanic is a good guy and I'd like to help him.

How can we all keep this from happening???

Malcolm S
