I think the VW Rabbit model and others had a major design failure in the area of the power distribution (fuse/relay) box. This apparent VW defect weakness may have resulted many federal safety recalls for the affected VW models in the United States. Apparently many circuits would short to other circuits while other circuits would simply lose coductivity and go "open circuit".
