Subject: '87 Westy - need to buy engine
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Hi,

I have an '87 4 speed that I need to buy an engine for. I have low oil pressure (more on that below) and am looking for comments on vendors. I've pretty much narrowed down the re-built engine search to GEX and Fast German Auto. Anyone out there purchased a 2.1L rebuilt water-cooled long block from either and have any comments? I'm especially interested in people who have had their re-built for at least 6 months to a year. I plan on buying an extended warranty and having the local VW dealer do the install. Will probably do the clutch at the same time.

Regarding the low oil pressure, my oil warning light comes on after being on the highway for awhile or driving in hot weather. The light and buzzer go on after coming down from high rpm's and the light comes on by itself at low rpm's. I use VW oil filters, either 20-W50 oil or straight 40 weight, have replaced the oil pump and oil pressure relief assembly, have changed the high rpm pressure sensor to the one that is specified in the Bentley's (not the one specified in the VW fiche) and still no luck. The dealer measured the pressure and said it was low (4psi at idle?) and the engine has 100K miles on it. I got the Westy with 68K miles on it.

Any help with the engine swap is appreciated!
