Whoa ! Those pins minimal as they are, are all that holds the seatback AND all the heavy stuff you put BEHIND it from coming forward when you slam on those superior VW brakes ;-) Seriously I think the pins are important, but they don't need to be welded. I installed the mounting brackets for the pins with a series of steel (not aluminum) 3/16 pop rivets. The original is often held with four little spot welds. I've installed both a Weekender bed, and a Carat bed which is 3 inches narrower and requires extra hardware in the form of metal standoffs for the mounting bolts, and uses different pin brackets.
