Subject: poptop opening while driving; latch & seal problem (How to meet
              a NJ trooper)
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

I thought it was latched! Until it opened on the highway. Fortunately the wind rumble in the canvas warned me to slow down/pull over. When the entire assembly self-inflated I was moving at only about 30 mph. No apparent damage. LOTS of adrenaline. After a thorough expletive-laden flashlight inspection, I realized that the seal along one side was rolled sdeways and off the edge of the fiberglass just enough to keep the lid from coming all the way down. Less than 1/4 inch and the latch was not engaged. WARNING! The latch may feel/sound locked when you pull the roof down; push up hard against the roof to make sure. Two queries for the list; Has any one fabricated a back-up lock for the poptop latch? Some sort of hook & eye insurance? (I currently have 25 feet of nylon mainsail line doing this) The seal has what looks like a continuous insert of rusted metal retaining rail insde it. The rubber itself is good. Has anyone re-used the rubber and is the metal rail or clips available separately? Should I just replace the whole seal? Thanks, Carol S sussman
