Per, I'd hook up an AC gauge and recharge the R-12 (a superior product which I believe is still being used by everywhere in the world other than US) or R-134. You should be able to verify which freon has been used in the system by finding a decal or the type of refill valves. Since you said the AC is seldom used, chances are the freon has been leaking out faster than normal. That's why the owner's manual has always suggested that use your AC once for a while even during the winter time to circulate freon/oil mix and prevent the seal dry-out and freon leak.
