I have one of those hot water liquid crystal stickers on the end of my
tank.  It has stayed on for years now.  It shows the level nicely, but
getting a cupful of hot water under there without dousing yourself is
a trick.

I saw a newer style one that uses the liquid crystal concept without
requiring hot water.
