My first thought is that you need to get the electrical part of your ignition switch replaced. Next time this happens, try to wiggle your key to see if anything happens. The ignition switch is a very common failure on VWs, and it is not hard to replace. You need to disassemble the upper part of the steering coloumn, though. And if you have 20 other keys on the same ring as your car key, loose' em.
