Tales of my lifelong love of Volkswagens... Bought a new '87 GL Vanagon to replace my beat-up '85 Weekender while transferring good parts over to the '87. First shifting into second in the '87 was crunchy, I got several good replies from the list (thank you) and will be changing to Redline MTL soon I think. Still have to fix the temp gauge (light works, needle doesn't) as soon as I get around to pulling the dash cluster. Here's the fun part: I was getting instances of no power so I took it into a local shop and said 'fix-it' (I just don't have time right now). The diagnosis - plugged catalytic and fuel leak. I told them to fix the fuel leak and said to myself, I have a parts car, I'll just get the catalytic off the '85 (I replaced the exaust gaskets last year and the cat was good). Fortunately I had used SS fasteners so the cat and muffler came right off. Boy, it sure seemed dark in the catalytic converter, guess I'll hold it up to the light and look thru it...gee, isn't there supposed to be something in there? To make a long story short, I ordered a new cat yesterday. Now, don't get me started on the 5 minute/half hour job fixing that missing screw on the rear side marker light!!!
