A final thought before I depart this list -


Remember when you go to drain your gearbox that the FIRST plug you
remove is the FILL plug.  That way if you can't get it out, you still
have oil in the gear box.  If you drain it first and THEN discover your
fill plug i frozen in place . . .  :-(


Time to leave this list again, permanently I guess.  Sold the diesel
vanagon this evening to some folk who seem to want to give it a good
home and keep it going.  So -  many thanks to this community for the
knowledge and ideas freely shared - many happy, safe, and rewarding
miles and road trips to you all!
