Dan,

Don't waste your money on expensive synthetics for a 1982 diesel. Use Shell Rotela (I'm not exactly sure of the spelling of that) and change it every 3000 and your filter.. Your engine will be fine and you'll save a lot of money.

There are basically two reasons to use expensive synthetics, 1. your gonna run the hell out of the engine and push it to the max, 2. You live in a cold as hell climate (as I do) and you want the engine, starter etc. to last.

Modern blends of conventional oil are so good that synthetics are usually overkill.
